The General Terms (identified later in this policy) are complicated legal terms that serve to protect us and make clear the privacy terms that will apply to users of Renti services. These terms below are here to give you a simple explanation of what the General Terms really mean in plain English.

However, these plain English terms are not legally binding and the General Terms are still the legal terms that will apply if anything goes wrong.

Renti is an online application portal that allows tenants to create a rental profile to apply for rental properties, quickly and easily. It enables fast, easy communication between the tenant, property manager and landlord to keep everyone updated on the application process.

Renti collects personal information on the tenant, which includes ID, credit and income information which is used by the property manager and landlord to determine who is the best fit for renting their property. At all times with client interaction with the Renti platform, Renti is observing the Privacy Principles to ensure only the required information is provided and any private or personal information is stored safely and removed in accordance with the Privacy Act 2020, Humans Right Act 1993 and the Residential Tenancies Act 1986.

Information from preferred candidates, who are successful in their application and also those unsuccessful, is passed onto and stored by the property manager within their database or landlord in accordance with Section 123A of the Residential Tenancies Act 1986 and with your approval and consent, also stored in Renti, to make it easier for you to apply for future properties.

Your personal information will be protected with the highest standards and can be removed on your request. The Privacy Act 2020 governs how we handle your personal information and The Credit Reporting Privacy Code 2020 (“Code”) governs how we handle your personal credit information.

  • Personal Information: Renti stores your personal information when you use our service. Because of this, Renti takes on the legal responsibilities that come with storing this information. It is a requirement by law; that information pertaining to preferred applicants is stored for no less than 12 months. Applicants who are not successful; will be prompted to remove their personal information and account with Renti in 90 days from when the profile was created.
  • Collection and Use of Personal Information: To successfully deliver Renti's service, we are required to collect and disclose your personal information with our agents for verification purposes. Consent will always be obtained before information is shared.

  • Security: Renti uses highly secure cloud services by Amazon Web Services (AWS). Renti provides encryption in transit with TLS across all services. At all times, the privacy principles are observed. To mitigate any security concerns, we ask for the minimal amount of information required for each stage of the application process and setting up a new tenancy.
  • Third-party Links: When you click on a third-party link to another site that is not operated by us, we have no control over or responsibility for the content or privacy policies of these other sites. At all times, steps will be taken to ensure that links and partnerships with third-party providers undergo regular data security checks and integration auditing processes.

General Terms

Renti Limited, a limited company incorporated in New Zealand, is a Software as a Service (SaaS) system using optical character recognition technology and integrations with banking technology, government and credit sources to verify the identity and fit of a tenant for a prospective property. This privacy policy (Privacy Policy) applies to users of the web address (Website). This Privacy Policy is used to inform you of Renti's policies relating to the use, collection, and disclosure of personal information when you use our service. It also provides for the rights customers have in respect of their personal information and our obligations under the Privacy Act 2020. To provide real estate businesses with software to enable agencies to operate efficiently, Renti operates in accordance with the Privacy Act 2020. Due to the nature of our business, it is necessary to obtain personal information and Renti as a business is aware of our Responsibilities and obligations when collecting, storing and sharing this information.

The Privacy Act 2020 came into force on 1 December 2020, replacing the Privacy Act 1993. The Privacy Act 2020 has 13 privacy principles that govern how businesses and organisations should collect, handle and use personal information. Collection of Personal Information

The nature of the service means that individuals applying for a property via Renti and our agents (where applicable) will be required to provide specific information about their person, and suitability for the property at different stages of the application process. We only collect personal information that is necessary (i) for the purposes of the services, (ii) for the performance of a contract for which you are a party, (iii) for which you have given consent for such processing of your data, or (iv) for compliance with a legal obligation to which we are subject.

Renti has taken all steps to mitigate the requirement around the disclosure of personal and private information, and in accordance with Section 13A of the Residential Tenancies Act 1986 and the privacy principles personal information that is required will be the minimal requirement for the relevant stage of the application and tenancy agreement.

The type of personal information we collect or which we may hold about you may include, but is not limited to:

  • full name;
  • date of birth;
  • address;
  • phone number;
  • e-mail address;
  • password;
  • images and details contained in your identity documentation (for example your passport or driver's licence and so forth);
  • photo of you if you choose to upload a profile photo, which makes it easier for your property manager to identify your application;
  • job title;
  • company name;
  • payment information – if you choose a verified profile. This information is stored and secured by a third-party provider, Stripe;
  • pet information including a photo if you choose to upload it;
  • name, age and relationship of other people living with you;
  • credit score;
  • income levels; and
  • information on how you use our products and services such as your Internet Protocol ('IP') address, server address, domain name, and information on your browsing activity when visiting our Website.

The personal information that we collect therefore differs from person to person depending on the type of identity documentation verified. If you provide us with personal information or about someone other than yourself, you agree that you are authorised to do so and agree to inform that person who we are, that we will use and disclose that information for the service and they have the ability to access the personal information we have about them.

You have no obligation to provide Renti with any personal information that is requested by us. However, due to the nature of the service, if you choose not to provide us with such information, we may be unable to provide you with our service. We collect your Personal Information in the following ways:

  • when you complete an application for a rental property, or complete a tenant profile.
  • when you request us to act on your behalf or you instruct your agent to act on your behalf via the Website/Application;
  • when you provide information about a customer service issue; and
  • when you visit our Website

Renti may disclose your Personal Information to:

  • the property management agency and landlord whose property listing you are applying to; and
  • Government entities and other external data providers that hold your information on you in order to verify that the information provided by you is consistent with the records held by such organisations; and
  • Any other services that you consent to provide your information to, such as moving services and any other partners.

Using Personal Information

We understand the importance of using your personal information in a responsible and secure manner. Your personal information may only be used by Renti under the following circumstances:

  • with your awareness and consent.
  • to identify you when you register and login to your account;
  • the operation and maintenance of your account;
  • to enable us to operate the service and provide it to you as requested;
  • verifying identification documents against their originating official database;
  • conveying your personal information to your nominated agent who will be relying on your verified identification (e.g. property manager, landlord etc) for legal purposes;
  • payment processing;
  • dealing with requests, enquiries, complaints, and other customer services;
  • to analyse the Website and information about users, including research into our user demographics and user behaviour in order to improve our content and service;
  • to contact you about your account and provide customer service support, including responding to your comments and questions;
  • to share aggregate (non-identifiable) statistics of users of the service to prospective advertisers and partners;
  • to keep you informed about the service, features and offers we think you may find useful or which you have requested;
  • to sell or market Renti products and services to you;
  • to comply with any legal, government or regulatory obligation;
  • interacting with organisations that Renti has a business relationship with for the purpose of enabling the performance of the Service or other services you expressly require;
  • to better understand your needs and the needs of users in the aggregate, diagnose problems, analyse trends, improve the features and usability of the service, and better understand and market to our customers and users; and
  • to keep the service safe and secure.

In using our service you authorise Renti to pass on any personal information that you provide to the property manager or landlord for the purpose of carrying out or completing the required steps in order to progress applications to rent a property. We may use your personal information for other purposes which are directly related to those above that would reasonably be expected by you. You will receive marketing messages from us if you have given your consent, if you have requested or if you use the Service to access products or experiences from us and if you have not opted out of receiving marketing messages. Storage of Personal Information

Renti is a New Zealand company with its head office located in Auckland, New Zealand. Your data will be held in Amazon Web Services (AWS). The property managers and landlords that you are looking to rent a property from are, for legal purposes under the Residential Tenancies Act 1986, are required to assess your suitability to rent the property.

Once they have reviewed and accepted your application on Renti they store it within their own record system for the ongoing tenancy. For the purposes of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), New Zealand is considered a country that provides adequate protection for personal information, as confirmed by the European Commission in Commission Decision 2013/65/EU.

  • We will never sell your personal information to anyone.
  • We will only retain your personal information for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes we collected it for, including the purposes of satisfying any legal, accounting or statutory reporting requirements.

Your Rights

As an individual using Renti to apply for a property or create a rental profile, you are able to review your data during the application process and update any errors that might have occurred as the data has been entered or extracted from your ID. Once the application has been submitted, you can update your profile which will automatically update your application. Under the Privacy Act 2020, you also have the right to decide whether further information is available for the property manager under the 2-stage application process. You have the right to withdraw your application at any stage, and request that all information held for the application of a rental property be destroyed.

Under Section 123A of the Residential Tenancies Act 1986, if you become a preferred applicant for a property, notwithstanding whether you were successful or not, you have the right to request any personal information held about you for 12 months after the date of when you submitted the application.

Once the property has been rented, you will no longer be able to edit the information that was used to apply for that specific rental property. There will be an audit trail, so you can check any steps that were undertaken on the Renti platform. If you decide to terminate your account, you will need to email us at and we will deactivate it. If you you do not request for information to be removed; you will receive an automatic reminder 90 days after your initial enquiry asking whether you wish for your account to be frozen or permanently deleted.

If you have a user account and your account is deleted, all personal information will be deleted immediately. If your account is frozen; all personal information, except your account credentials, will be encrypted and safely stored, and upon request will be made available again to you using your account credentials.

You have the option of changing your marketing preferences at any time your account remains open via account settings.

You have the following rights with regard to your personal information:

  • the right to request access to your personal information. This enables you to receive a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
  • The right to request any information held about you during the application process.
  • The right to request any information held about you if you were the preferred applicant for up to 12 months.
  • The right to request to correct your personal information if it is inaccurate. You may also supplement any incomplete personal information we have, taking into account the purposes of the processing.
  • The right to request deletion of your personal information if;
    • your personal information is no longer necessary for the purposes for which we collected or processed them; or
    • you withdraw your consent if the processing of your personal information is based on consent and no other legal ground exists; or
    • you object to the processing of your personal information and we do not have an overriding legitimate ground for processing; or
    • your personal information is unlawfully processed; or
    • your personal information has to be deleted for compliance with a legal obligation.
  • The right to object to the processing of your personal information. We will comply with your request, unless we have a compelling overriding legitimate interest for processing or we need to continue processing your personal information to establish, exercise or defend a legal claim.
  • The right to restrict the processing of personal information, if:
    • the accuracy of your personal information is contested by you, for the period in which we have to verify the accuracy of the personal information; or
    • the processing is unlawful and you oppose the deletion of your personal information and request restriction; or
    • we no longer need your personal information for the purposes of processing, but your personal information is required by you for legal claims; or
    • you have objected to the processing, for the period in which we have to verify overriding legitimate grounds

This is a security measure to ensure that personal information is not disclosed to any person who has no right to receive it. Log Data

Whenever you visit our website, Renti collects information that your browser sends to us which is called log data. This log data may include information such as your computer's Internet Protocol (IP) address, browser version, pages of our service that you visit, the time and date of your visit, the time spent on those pages, and other statistics. This helps us continue to improve our service.


Cookies are files with small amounts of data that are commonly used as an anonymous unique identifier. These are sent to your browser from our Website and are stored on your device's hard drive. Renti operates with full intent, including utilising the best available technology and clear internal policies and procedures to maintain the Privacy Principles as outlined in under the Privacy Act 2020.
